John grew up in North Dakota and left shortly after graduating high school to join the Army. John served in Vietnam in the U.S. Army as a helicopter door gunner/crew chief with the 114th Assault Helicopter Company in the Mekong Delta in 1971-1972. Upon returning from Vietnam he trained as a military policeman and began his career in law enforcement.

John has been an avid sport parachutist and flier of hang gliders but never became a pilot, choosing instead, to take up sailing as a hobby. Coming from a family of veterans he is committed to working with the Warbirds team to provide the best museum experience possible while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
