This NASCAR Super Modified was built for Mike Parker of Fresno, CA by Mike Sargent, the son of NASCAR Super Modified great, Marshall Sargent. The NASCAR Super Modifieds were destined to race on dirt tracks, mainly the San Jose Fairgrounds but they also raced at Watsonville Speedway and later at Hanford Speedway. They ran huge top and nose wings, or reverse airfoils, which made them very spectacular to watch as the additional down force allowed these cars to be driven at full throttle almost completely around the track. This made for very fast, close, and exciting racing for both the drivers and the spectators. The California NASCAR rules were unique and were intended to prevent local drivers from traveling to other areas and racing with other organizations. This meant the promoter would have a full field of cars each night as these cars were illegal to run with full sprint car classes. The only major differences between these cars and winged sprint cars was the use of rectangular tubing for the chassis main frame rails, the use of squared off tail tanks and the huge wings or reverse air foils. During the late 1970's through the mid 1980's, these Mike Sargent built cars were the most competitive in the field and this car, in the hands of Mike Parker, was no exception. |
