Super Modifieds were extremely popular in the 1960's. The full Sprint Cars still ran open cockpit (no roll cages), and were far more dangerous. The most popular Supers in the southwest were built by Don Edmunds of Edmunds Autoresearch and Jim Culbert of CAE. They were among the pioneers of "mass produced" race cars. These cars soon became known as Edmunds Super Modifieds. They were built with many of the same specifications and parts as the more "professional" sprint cars. The major difference was the added safety feature of a complete roll cage. It allowed many of these drivers to walk away from serious accidents. This #91 car was owned and raced by Buddy Taylor of Albuquerque, New Mexico. It is one of the earliest copies of the famed Don Edmunds #54 Super Modified which appeared on the cover of Hot Rod magazine in July, 1966. Buddy was one of the best open wheel racers to come out of that area. He was extremely competitive in both super modifieds and sprint cars where ever he traveled. While exact records of races won by this car are unavailable, Buddy reportedly won over 200 feature events in his career and it is believed a good number of those wins came in #91. The #91 car was located and rescued from a field behind the Unser Museum in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It had been allowed to deteriorate to an all but unrecognizable state. It was restored to this beautiful condition by Buz Shoemaker and Sons who sold it to Richard Woodland. |
